Synopsis
Loose Ends was made in collaboration with Cultúrbug*. The work is of a white cotton sheet thorn into strips, as the strips hang from a large dead Yew tree, blowing in the wind.
Concept & Technique
The video work was exhibited as part of the final exhibition marking the end of the inaugural Arthouse NCAD Graduate Award and Bursary 2011-2012, in Stradbally, Co Laois. This was Vera McEvoy’s first artist residency on leaving college. *Cultúrbug, the name developed by the group of participants, who worked on creative explorations with Vera McEvoy on a weekly basis over a year. The projects undertaken were a mix of collaborative and participatory processes to explore contemporary art and its relevance to their lives in the village of Stradbally. Loose Ends was a temporary installation placed in an old Yew tree on the ground of a derelict building. It is a visual response to historical and social research which was undertaken by the group in relation to a small orphanage, developed circa 1867. Access was granted to the land and ruins by the current land owner. It expresses freedom and behaviour within environments of power, restraint and control. Many materials and techniques were explored by the group; merging various objects with clay and plaster, knitting with wire, plastic and shredded papers. Temporary installations were placed in selected local landscapes and documented. The year culminated with a final exhibition in the Arthouse called The final exhibition explored the wilderness of past and present, of influence and institution and of word and image. Supported by the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and Laois County Council Arts Office. The textile installation was exhibited, in a large tree, as part of Sculpture in Context, National Botanical Gardens, Dublin in September 2012.
