BUM SHOWER: Adventures from the Gig Economy
Beth Fox

Description
As an elder Millennial, I am interested in how digital technologies have reshaped our lives. I write humorous essays exploring themes of labour, anxiety and absurdity. These essays draw inspiration from the Irish oral storytelling tradition and serve as the foundation of my practice.
BUM SHOWER: Adventures from the Gig Economy (2020) interrogates the algorithmic control exerted over a domestic cleaner by a startup app. As the protagonist navigates a series of anonymous households her increasing curiosity about the homeowners becomes a metaphor for the disembodied, yet intimate, interactions that define working for these platforms.
BUM SHOWER is the first film in a trilogy of works that explore gig economy labour and the dehumanising effects of service apps, highlighting how tech platforms enclose previously interpersonal actions, isolating us and changing how we relate to one another.
