Basil Al-Rawi is a visual artist working with photography, moving image, and simulation. Al-Rawi is a cinematography graduate of the National Film School at IADT and holds an MA in photographic studies from the University of Westminster.
In 2012 Al-Rawi was selected for Axisweb’s MAstars programme for his photographic project Façade, which subsequently exhibited at Fresh Faced + Wild Eyed at The Photographers Gallery in 2013.
Al-Rawi has exhibited in Australia, England, and Ireland. In 2019 he received a scholarship from the Glasgow School of Art and SGSAH to pursue PhD research at the School of Simulation and Visualisation. His practice-based research project is concerned with using archive photographs, audio-visual oral histories and Virtual Reality (VR) to explore the creative reconstruction of vernacular photographic moments and associated memories from Iraqi diaspora. The Iraq Photo Archive represents the first stage of this project.
His work, 'The Salmon Leapt Toward Babel' was selected for the annual MExIndex Screening in 2020.
